How we fix the Musi, the right way

We are not against fixing the Musi. We are against faking it. Real revival starts with clean water and with people. This is what we are asking the government to do.

How?

Say No to

  • Concrete
  • Make-up
  • Displacement
  • Real estate

Say Yes to

  • Clean water
  • Real consultation
  • A living river
  • A protected floodplain

1. Put one team in charge

Make a Musi River Basin Authority for the whole basin, from the Anantagiri Hills to the Krishna, so six departments stop passing the buck. Make it share real data and listen to experts.

2. Clean the water first

Stop the building until the sewage is truly treated. Build the 21 sewage plants promised back in 2019. Control factory waste from Patancheru. Stop hiding dirt with Godavari water and treat the 1,800 MLD of sewage.

3. Protect the land and water

Bring back GO 111 to guard the lakes. Mark and protect the floodplain and Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. Make 'water zones' in the city plan that cannot be turned into buildings. Protect the basin's forests.

4. Ask the people

Hold real, written talks with the families who live along the Musi, like our field consultations at Nagole and Hydershakote. Their homes and their work matter.

How?

What the people of the bastis are asking for

These eight demands come from the families who live along the Musi. They are in their own words.

Handwritten letters on brown paper, one reading Say no to Demolitions, another addressed to a national leader.
Letters written by hand, by the families who live along the river. Hyderabad, March 2026
  1. 1

The Musi River must be rejuvenated while ensuring the well-being of the people living along its banks.

  2. 2

The people living along the Musi are ready to sacrifice their lives, but they are unwilling to leave their homes.

  3. 3

The Imlibun bus depot must be relocated away from the Musi River.

  4. 4

The dumping yard located at the Musi River must be removed.

  5. 5

Farmhouses illegally constructed by politicians around Gandipet must be demolished immediately.

  6. 6

Desilting must be carried out in Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar.

  7. 7

Lakhs of crores have reportedly been spent on the Musi River between 1997 and 2026; while the government cites figures, not even a single kilometer has been cleaned. A probe by a sitting judge must be conducted into this scam.

  8. 8

The riverfront project must be cancelled.

Other cities did it the right way

Seoul (Cheonggyecheon) and London (the Thames) spent years asking the public first. That is the difference between a living river and a concrete one.
